Lithos
In Malta, the line between land and built environment is almost invisible. This series traces the life of stone from its primordial beginnings deep beneath the Mediterranean to the intricate facades that define the island’s identity.
Stone here is not only a material; it is a witness of the past. It holds the fossils of ancient seas, the sweat of the quarrymen, the intricate design of art, and the permamence of architecture. Through this lens, I explore the metamorphosis of rock – how it is formed and carved, how it is excavated, how it weathers, and how it eventually returns to the earth, creating a timeless dialogue between the raw power of nature and the enduring spirit of human ingenuity.
Within this deeply rooted local narrative, Vince Briffa’s Migration Summit Monument—the intertwined monument photographed here—is an interesting exception. Sculpted from Italian marble rather than native stone, it introduces a new layer to the dialogue: one of cultural exchange across borders. According to the artist, the sculpture symbolises the geographical link between Malta, Europe and Africa.
